One of the oldest films on this list, The Princess Bride is a cult classic that everybody should watch at least once in their lifetime - tween or not. It’s the ultimate fairytale, exploring themes of true love, morality, revenge, and friendship while throwing in some epic sword fighting and adventure throughout the journey. As this is an older film, some of the themes are a little more mature than themes that modern-day PG films take on. Keep this in mind when deciding if your tween is old enough to watch.

Looking for more suggestions your tween will love? Check out our blog.]]>First, what actually is period underwear? Basically, they are exactly what they sound like: underwear you wear on your period. While different companies make their period underwear with different methods, most consist of a regular looking pair of underwear with extra absorbent layers in the gusset. Some have leakproof layers, others have odourless layers, but the function is always the same: absorbent underwear that won’t leak during your period.
Period underwear works much the same way as a pad, except instead of placing an absorbent layer over your underwear, it’s sewn into the fabric itself. By incorporating the absorbancy into the gusset, the entire absorbent layer can move with your body, absorbing any leaks that pads and tampons can miss.
We know what some of you’re thinking: isn’t that a nappy? Thanks to streamlined and stylish design, most period underwear is slim enough to be indistinguishable from normal underwear - no unsightly bunching to be seen. What’s more, the moisture-wicking technology means that you’ll likely feel dryer down there than when using a pad.
The length of wear of period underwear for teens ultimately depends on the make and the user’s flow. Most brands offer a range of absorbency levels, with light underwear designed for light periods, holding less than a tampon’s worth, and heavier underwear holding up to 4 tampons’ worth.
For the average flow, period underwear is designed to be worn all day, with overnight underwear to be worn while you sleep. This range allows you to continue your usual underwear habits without having to change throughout the day or night. Your tween should be fine to wear them on a school day, but we recommend she try them out at home first to get a feel for how they work for her unique body and flow.
When used correctly, period underwear is just as hygienic as any other period product. However, just like any other period product, period underwear can become unhygienic when used incorrectly. The key to keeping your period underwear hygienic is to follow the washing and wear recommendations from the company you bought them from.
When investing in period underwear for tweens and teens, hygiene can become an issue due to lack of education. Make sure you have the hygiene conversation with your tween so that she is aware of the risks of thrush and UTIs and knows how to properly clean and wear her period underwear for the appropriate amount of time.
Keeping period underwear clean is what will ultimately keep everything hygienic. All brands have varying cleaning practices, but most follow the rules of common sense. Wash or at least rinse period underwear directly after use. How to wash period underwear is usually as simple as throwing in the washing machine on cold with the rest of the laundry.
Now for the big question: does period underwear for tweens and teens actually work? Unfortunately, this question doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all answer. Some people love their period underwear and never experience any leaks, others can’t stand them.
Many users recommend using period underwear in conjunction with pads, tampons, or menstrual cups, using it as more of an emergency barrier than their primary period product. They are also particularly praised for being perfect on those days leading up to or coming off your period to catch any unexpected spotting.
Overall it seems that the general consensus is that, even if your tween or teen can’t solely rely on her period underwear to catch her flow, it is nice to have an extra layer of defence there, just in case.
Believe it or not - yes! Not all brands offer period swimwear, but brands such as Modibodi, AWWA, and Ruby Love all create leakproof period underwear for swimming. Most of these don’t venture into heavy absorbency, but all should last a swim so that your tween or teen can stay active and cool on their period without stressing about leaks.
Period underwear has been around for years, but until recently it could only be found online or in specialty stores. As period underwear for tweens and teens has become more popular, mainstream underwear sellers have begun stocking their shelves with absorbent undies. Now you even buy period underwear for tweens and teens in your local grocery store. Here are a few brands we recommend.
The Bonds brand of period underwear is super accessible as it’s stocked at most Woolworths shopping centres. They sell a wide range of their ‘bloody comfy’ period undies in various fun styles, catering for light to heavy flows, ranging in price between $20 and $30.
One of the original Australian period underwear brands known for their all-inclusive products is Modibodi. Their prices start at around $20, rising up to $30 for their higher absorbency products and offering decent discounts if you buy multiple pairs in packs. They even have a range of period underwear for tweens and teens called Modibodi Red, coming in fun colours and designs your tween will love.
Another great Australian brand that sells period underwear for tweens and teens is Love Luna. On top of a wide range of affordable period underwear starting at just $15, they also sell reusable pads and menstrual cups, acting as your one-stop-shop for sustainable period supplies.
Thinx
AWWA
Aisle
Knix
Ruby Love
Bambody
Ultimately, it will depend on your tween or teen’s preferences, but overall period underwear is a great place to start. Menstrual cycles can be tricky to manoeuvre in those first years. Having an unintimidating option that looks just like normal underwear and will catch unexpected leaks can provide a great deal of comfort and support to your tween as they learn more about their flow.

Believe it or not, all these changes don’t just appear when your kids turn 13. The tween years are just as impactful when it comes to their overall development. The question is, what is the difference between teen and tween, and why does that distinction matter?
The definition of a teen is pretty straight forward: a teen is a person between the ages of 13 and 19. The tween definition is a little less clear cut when you’re asking “what age is a tween”. There is no official tween definition. Generally, tweens are considered to be people who are neither young children nor adolescents. This usually falls between the ages of 8 and 12.
Also known as pre-teens, tweens go through their own changes and transitions just as teens do. While everyone begins their tween journey at slightly different times, at some point in the 8 to 12 age range you’ll likely begin to notice big changes in your kids. They will reach a point where they will no longer be your little girl or boy anymore as they begin to develop independence, individuality, and maturity. If you have noticed these changes and your kid hasn’t hit 13, they are officially in the tween years.
Throughout the tween years, your tween will be going through big changes. They will likely enter puberty, undergo significant brain development, their social lives and circles will change, and they will begin to crave independence and individuality. All of these changes are preparing them and their bodies for the teen years, which is where they will shift from childhood to adulthood. Here are a few of the key differences between tween and teen when it comes to their development and what you can expect.
One of the biggest differences you’ll notice from childhood to the tween and teen years is the mental maturity of your child. They will, quite simply, begin to grow up. You’ll start to notice your tween beginning to empathise with others, grow into more mature tastes, and further understand the world around them. Sometimes seen as a loss of innocence, this maturing is a good thing. While you’ll see the first glimmers of mental maturity in the tween years, the teen years are where your child will truly grow into an adult.
As tweens creep closer to the teen years, you’ll notice them developing a clearer sense of self. They will likely begin to explore new interests as they find their own individuality. This self-exploration is experimental, so don’t be shocked if their tastes and interests change frequently throughout this time. The best thing we can do is encourage this self-exploration as much as we can within reason. It is part of what will define their sense of self that continues to develop throughout their teen years.
As they experiment with their individuality, your tween will also begin to crave independence. This can be difficult for some parents to go through, as it can feel as though your child is pushing you away.
The key difference between tween and teen here is that, usually, tweens are still receptive to their parents and are only beginning to stretch their independence by increasing responsibilities such as chores and extra-curricular activities. In teens, this longing for independence can become extreme. They are usually much less likely to want to spend time or discuss their feelings with family once they’re in their teen years.
More big changes that occur in the tween years are social changes. One day your child will be playing at lunch, the next day they will be a tween, spending their spare time socialising rather than playing.
These social changes often come with pressure to fit in. This, unfortunately, can result in a lack of confidence, peer pressure, and other social challenges. These social pressures may initially intensify when your tween moves into the teen years. As your teen grows in confidence and maturity, social challenges are likely to fade in importance toward the end of the teen years.
Children are in a constant state of growth. When they reach the tween years, this growth will be magnified by the onset of puberty. It goes without saying that your child will experience some pretty significant physical changes throughout their tween and teen years. Everyone’s puberty starts at a different time and will present in unique ways. This can make this period particularly difficult for tweens and teen.
While your child navigates their way through their tween and teen years, their relationship with their parents will change. The difference between tween and teen relationships with parents is that, while tweens are more receptive to parent’s input, teens can generally be a little more distant and sometimes even hostile towards their parents.
Remember that this too shall pass. All you can do is be there for them and support their self-exploration while implementing healthy boundaries and rules. As they grow you’ll be able to influence and guide them. When they mature so will your relationship. While they may not be your little boy or girl anymore, your new relationship with them will grow into something just as special and rewarding.

While an easy party at home may not be ‘cool’ anymore, the good news is that it means you won’t have to clean up after messy kids who are running around mid-sugar-rush anymore. Some of the best teen party ideas take place outside of the home. In the past with my own teen I've negotiated lower numbers of friends attending to enjoy the benefit of a party with a difference. Here are just a few teen party ideas that will impress your teen.
For a small group of friends, an escape room is an awesome teen party idea. Escape rooms essentially lock you in a room with your group of friends where you have nothing but clues and your own wits to riddle your way out. They are located all across Australia, with many companies offering party packages to extend your teen’s party after the mystery has been solved.
Especially popular with teen boys, but just as good for dare devil girls, is go-karting. If your teen has the need for speed and a competitive edge, this is a great idea for their next birthday party. To make it special, book a private slot so that they can race their friends without other go-karters getting in the way.
For birthdays in the summer months, we suggest a party at an inflatable water park. These parks are usually located on the coast, floating on the ocean, and supply hours of fun on a hot day. They can include massive water slides, obstacle courses, and more. Some parks even let you book out a session just for your party depending on how many guests you have.
The teen years are the age where birthday parties become less about games and activities and more about hanging out with friends. If your teen is entering that stage, consider a beach party. Beach parties are great for just hanging out while still offering enough to do by way of swimming and playing beach games that it won’t be boring.
Most cities, beaches, or places near rivers, have canoeing tours that are generally lead by an experienced guide and kids pair up and canoe through the tour. They learn more about their local area, marine life, flora and fauna and its a great day out and about. Make sure you advise the tour guide in advance the age of the kids attending and ensure they are prepared for a bit of fun as well as imparting education.
Along the same vein, we have pool parties. While this one isn’t exactly away from the home, it is at least outside of the house with minimal mess involved. Pool parties are easy and fun as your teen will be able to determine whether they just want to hang out and swim with friends or play games in the water. Catering is also easy as no pool party is complete without a barbecue.
Perfect on its own or to wind up a pool or beach party is a bonfire. Being old enough to responsibly hang out at a bonfire alone is a big deal, which makes this a nice moment of trust between you and your teen. All you will have to do is prepare a bag of marshmallows and a cooler of drinks while you watch from a safe distance.
This is an option for the little more adventurous. My daughther did this with a group of 10 girls for her 13th birthday as she wanted to do something a little different. Many of these places also have cafes so you may also be able to finish the party off in location with pizza and cake etc. Make sure you check in advance for the age and height requirements for this activity as some of the more challenging tree top walks do have restrictions, particularly those with flying foxes and other attractions.
Ask your teen if there is a show or concert they have been dying to see. While it may not line up exactly with their birthday, chances are that they’ll happily give up a traditional party to go see their favourite artist with all of their friends. You can either book out a row of seats for your teen and all their friends, or coordinate with your teen’s friend’s parents for a group birthday celebration.
If your teen is less into music but has a sporting team they are obsessed with, find out when the next big game is in your town. Book out a row of seats for them and their friends and buy out the food stalls for a fun viewing experience. If you want to go all out, you could even get a box so that they can cheer on their team in the lap of luxury.

We get to the bottom of this and find out what you can do to keep your teen trying new things without overscheduling your teenager.
Before we delve into the signs of overwhelm in teens, we first want to establish that free time isn’t a bad thing. We all want our teenagers to keep busy and lead healthy, active lives, so when we see them on the couch watching Netflix our first instinct is usually to convince them to get up and do something. If they spend all their time vegging out, this is totally valid, but if they’re generally an active person, it can be valuable to let them enjoy some downtime.
Packing your teen’s days full of activities and tasks, even if they enjoy them, doesn’t allow them to practice any independence or self-exploration. Free time is where your teen could learn the most about themselves, rather than just spending their days going through the motions, doing as they’re told.
Without this free time, they could begin to feel overwhelmed.
One of the most obvious signs that your teenager is overscheduled is if they aren’t sleeping well. Teenagers need a lot of sleep. If stress is getting in the way of their sleep it could cause them to not function well during the day and even harm their development.
If your teenager is usually a social butterfly and suddenly starts spending all their free time alone, this can be a sign of overwhelm. It may not seem like it, but spending more time watching TV or Youtube videos can be an indication that their schedule is too busy.
This is because they are so overwhelmed that they don’t have the brain space available to face social interaction with friends, opting to veg out alone instead which takes little to no effort.
If your teen has no downtime whatsoever, this is a clear sign that they are probably overscheduled. While we all want our kids to be active and well rounded, there is value in them having their own free time to fill however they choose.
Sometimes, when your teenager says they can’t go out with friends because they need to study, they are being responsible with their time management. If this happens constantly, however, that’s when it could potentially be an issue.
Keep an eye out for excessive excuse-making. If a teenager is overscheduled, their overwhelm can make them shut down and believe everything is too hard. This can get to the point where they have an excuse to get out of everything, even just to go out to dinner with the family or play a board game.
If you can tell that your teenager is upset by something, but they won’t communicate with you about what it is, chances are they’re having trouble processing it themselves. This can be because they are overwhelmed. If they’re constantly going from one task to the next, juggling multiple responsibilities, they may not have the time to breathe and process their emotions at the end of each day.
Do you think your teenager might have a little too much going on? The first step is to look at your teen’s schedule and see what you can get rid of. Is there a sport they have given a good go, but never truly enjoyed? Is there a club they are in that always seems to cause them stress and anxiety?
This is all about finding balance. You don’t want to get rid of too much because it is beneficial for teenagers to challenge themselves and face mild adversity as they develop. Use your intuition to determine what’s worth seeing through and what can be cut from the list.
If you don’t want to cut anything from your teenager’s schedule, you can take away some of the overwhelm by shouldering any burden that comes with certain activities.
It’s important for teens to learn responsibility, so we aren’t suggesting you do their homework for them or pack their school bag. What can be helpful is little things like packing lunches and keeping everything organised so there isn’t a frantic last-minute scramble to find the tennis gear or today’s homework.
The last tip to helping your teen with their overwhelm is to work on their time management skills. If they leave their schoolwork to the last minute, they are of course going to be overwhelmed by the fact that they have soccer practice the night before a big assignment is due. Block out study times during the week so that your teenager can keep on top of their work without stressing about it while they are at their activities.
Knowing how to recognise when your teenager is overscheduled can prevent serious issues such as burnout and panic attacks down the road. If your teen seems overwhelmed and our tips daren’t working, consider taking them to see a doctor or mental health provider to help them manage their emotions and time.
]]>First, we need to look at why and how unhealthy teen relationships come about.
It’s no secret that teenagers can be extremely insecure. Overwhelming self-doubt can make teens question whether they are attractive, smart, funny, and likeable enough and whether or not they deserve love. This can lead to them craving the attention and love of somebody who gives them affection, even if it comes with abuse.
We all remember the intensity of our first love, whether it turned out to be good, bad, or to be just infatuation. You may look back now and roll your eyes at your former self, but when you were in the moment, it was all-consuming. Your teen could be in that moment right now. They have nothing to compare to these strong feelings, which makes it difficult for them to take a step back and see the situation for what it is.
This lack of perspective is usually not a problem. It’s just a part of growing up. The trouble only comes if somebody uses this lack of perspective to manipulate your teen. An unhealthy relationship can result in your teen doing and saying things, and sometimes not saying things, for another person. This is because they truly believe they wouldn’t be able to cope with the heartbreak of losing them.
It’s no wonder that teens have unrealistic expectations about romance. Time and time again in popular culture, the ultimate picture of romance is portrayed as an innocent young girl, shown the ropes by the misunderstood ‘bad boy’ with a heart of gold. This is all well and good to sell stories, but in real life the bad boys don’t always have a heart of gold.
The narrative that girls and women can change the unacceptable behaviour of boys and men just by loving them sets them up with unrealistic expectations. Going into a relationship expecting to experience unacceptable behaviour is a surefire way to end up with an unhealthy teenage relationship.
If you combine insecurity, lack of perspective, and unrealistic expectations, teens end up not knowing what is and isn’t acceptable behaviour from a teenage relationship. Having no prior experience or healthy examples in the media to guide them, combined with their own self-doubt, can result in a teen entering an unhealthy relationship without realising it.
It’s our job as parents to inform our teenagers about what is acceptable. We need to raise their self-worth so that our kids recognise acceptable behaviour and also expect it.
Model Healthy Relationships
Whether you’re married, in a long term relationship, dating, or single, the romantic relationships you have will be what your children look to as an example. Without even trying, you send the message to your teenager that whatever you tolerate from your partners is acceptable. While no relationship is perfect, try to model healthy behaviour to your teenagers and children as they grow up. Even if your relationship ends, try to handle it with compassion and show your kids that, though heartbreak is hard, it isn’t the end of the world.
Keep an Open Dialogue
The best way to encourage healthy relationships is to talk about it. Open up the conversation about what is and isn’t acceptable behaviour in a relationship. This can be a serious sit-down talk, or just comments when watching a movie that portrays unrealistic and unhealthy romantic ideals.
By opening up the conversation, you will recognise any flawed or insecure thinking in your teen that could lead to an unhealthy relationship. You can then address the thought then and there, working to build your teen’s self-esteem and their concepts surrounding love and relationships.
The surest sign of an unhealthy teenage relationship is evidence of physical or verbal abuse. All unhealthy relationships have some form of verbal abuse, whether it be putting their partner down, calling them names, mocking them, gaslighting them, threatening them, or threatening to harm themselves if their partner ever leaves them. Ensure that your teenager knows what verbal abuse is and that it doesn’t have to be physical to be abuse.
Sudden, over-commitment such as telling someone you love them, will never leave them, and couldn’t live without them, is a definite warning sign. This intensity indicates that the person may be unstable in their emotions, overly attached, and have unrealistic expectations of the relationship themselves. Keep an eye out for relationships that move too quickly.
Every relationship has its highs and lows, but for the most part, they should be a positive experience. If your teenager’s relationship is constantly in a state of extreme highs or lows, that likely indicates there is something wrong.
If your teenager is withdrawing from hanging out with friends, engaging in hobbies, and even interacting with family, that is a big warning sign. Abusers often insist that their partners need to spend less time on themselves and more time with them, effectively isolating their partners from their friends and family.
If you have noticed any of these warning signs in your teenager’s relationship, consider them signs that it is unhealthy and create an open dialogue with your teen.
Unhealthy teenage relationships are a scary thing for parents to deal with, but that doesn’t mean you should ban dating altogether. Teenage relationships are an opportunity for your teen to grow, gain perspective, and experience their first love, all under your loving guidance.
While not all of their experiences may be positive, approach unhealthy relationships as learning experiences that will shape their concept of dating in the future. By teaching your teen to value their self-worth and be aware of warning signs, you can establish a healthy attitude towards relationships.
]]>Dear Parents, forget the terrible twos and make way for the testing tween years. Make no mistake that when your child enters their tweenager years, you and they are set for a lot of changes. Their hormones kick in and so do their emotional and physical transition. The changes can be rapid, so buckle in and get ready for the ride.

The definition of a tween is a young person aged between nine to twelve years old. Some view a tween as starting from the age of eight. Tween minds are developing and changing fast. As a result, their minds may actually skip the fact that they’re not teenagers yet. They may act like they are and want the perks that go with it too. Truth is, their minds and bodies may be changing but it’s up to us as parents to guide them and slow them down.
Tween development is rapid. The changes are not subtle and sometimes the stubbornness isn’t either. Your tweens physical development and emotional challenges, make this time an interesting one.
What motivates and drives then at school and home will most likely change. Their social life and skills will develop and evolve. The tween stage brings on a huge increase in hormones. This is the cause of all the physical and emotional changes. You might also note a greater sense of anxiety in your tween, note that this is normal as well. As their brain develops and matures, so do their ideas and understanding of their world.
They have gone from liking their dolls and toy cars to wanting a phone and downloading Instagram. Tween interests will change a fair amount as they work their way through their tween years. They will hone in on their likes and dislikes and create a sense of self during this time. Their interest plays a huge part in this process. Like the rapid changes that are happening in your tween, so will their interests. They will hop from one interest and hobby to the next and you will feel that you cannot keep up. The best thing you can do is be supportive and show interest.
Make no mistake that hormones will rock their world. The once quiet and agreeable child will now want to test the boundaries. As they want more freedom, we try and compensate for the loss of control by being over protective. At times it will feel like a tug of war. With a few tips though, the transition into parenting tweens need not be a time of turmoil.
They are in limbo
Connection is Key
Don’t think that because your tween craves for independence that you have to give it all. They still need boundaries and rules. It is important to stay connected with your tween. This could be as simple as connecting on the drive home from school, at dinner or on an evening walk. Wherever possible, make a connection with your tween on a daily basis. Their worlds are noisy from peers, social media and school. A lot of the times they will not be an open book and divulge information to you. Having these moments with them and connection, you are setting up a comfortable space for them to open up. Try not to be judgmental, listen and offer your love.
Keep track of their school and school work
It is time to let go a little
Tweens newfound need for independence is scary for a lot of parents. The feeling of rejection by your kids will be a common feeling so rest assured you are not alone. They will be relying on their friends more and talking to you less. Don’t take this personally. This transition in their lives in not about you but about them. Their need for greater autonomy is natural and very normal for this age. If you try to push too much and want to know everything about them, you run the risk of pushing your tween away. Instead, know that it’s a normal phase of tween development and make sure you connect with your tween once a day. Despite this need for autonomy, they still need you.

Here is your guide to the most popular card games for kids that they will love. This list was compiled by reviewing the highest rated feedback/purchase volume on multiple larger online stores both in Australia and the USA.
Ages: 8+ - Players: two to four
This game will test your problem-solving skills with a dash of luck. The deck has 100 cards numbered one to one hundred. Your mission is to get through 12, 10 or 8 levels having two, three or four players.
You will receive the number of cards according to the level you are on. One by one, you place these cards in a discard pile at the centre of the table from smallest to largest. No talking allowed though! You need to call each other’s bluff and this makes the game all the more fun. When you feel like it’s time to strike, you place down your lowest card. If no one has a smaller card than you, keep going! If someone does, unfortunately, everyone has to give up all their cards that are lower than what you put down. By the way, you also lose a life.

If your partner picks up on your signal and yells “you’ve got crabs!” before anyone else does you get points. If an opponent notices and yells “you’ve got crabs” then you lose points. Points come in the form of crabs and the team that ends up with the most crabs wins the game. It will take a couple of rounds to get the hang of the game. The game will move through the motions and competition will become intense when you do.
If you are in the market for a really fun and fast-paced game then You’ve got Crabs is perfect!

The objective of the game is to get rid of all the cards in your stock pile. Each player gets thirty cards and the card at the top of your pile is face up. There are four building piles at the centre of the table that start at one and pile up in ascending order to twelve. A Skip Bo card can be played like a wild card and can be put down in place for any number. When a building pile reaches twelve, the pile is reshuffled and put back into the centre stock pile.
It’s a fast-paced game that will take a couple of rounds for everyone to build up their understanding and pace. Rest assured though that when you do, this will become a huge favourite not only for kids but for the whole family! Each player has their own four discard piles. You can place cards on here in any order and a card is placed there at the end of your turn. The youngest player will go first and everybody will get 5 cards from their stockpile to start play. As soon as you play your five cards, draw another five. At the end of your turn when you can’t or don’t want to continue play, you put down one card in one of your four discard piles. The winner gets 25 points and an additional 5 points for every card in everyone else’s stockpile. The first person to get to 500 points wins.

This is a taboo topic not widely spoken about but happens more often than what people think. In fact, it is quite common. The medical name for bed wetting is enuresis (pronounced as en-yuh-ree-sis). Teen enuresis or teen bed wetting among healthy teenagers is very common. It happens to about one to two in every one hundred teenagers at some stage.
What is nocturnal enuresis?
Enuresis is the medical term for not being able to control wetting yourself. It is sometimes called involuntary urination. Nocturnal enuresis is when involuntary urination happens at night while you are asleep. It happens at an age where the person should already have bladder control.
You can see how and why it is a difficult topic for teenagers to discuss. Unfortunately, the teenage years can be a lot about image. So, teen bed wetting would not only affect their confidence but self-esteem.
Nocturnal Enuresis: Causes
There is not one exact cause of Nocturnal Enuresis in a teenager. There are a few things that could contribute to this problem.
A small bladder is another cause for teen enuresis. A small bladder will not be able the hold the normal amount of urine. Because of this, you will find that bedwetting becomes an issue.
Much evidence has shown that teen bedwetting is in the genes. If one parent was a bed wetter, it then carries about a 40% chance that the kids will have bed wetting problems. If both parents were bed wetters this percentage increases to around 77%.
Some teenagers are deep sleepers so that they do not feel that their bladder is full, and as a result, they wet the bed.
A large number of teenagers will not have any other symptoms other than the bed wetting, however, there can be other symptoms that come up.
Every teenager’s treatment will be different for enuresis. This is because the cause for every teenager will be different. There is not one solution but many that work together to tackle the root of the problem. This will hopefully stop the bed wetting.
This is usually the first plan of attack for most teens. The doctor will work through what foods might be causing the bed wetting but with most if not all cases the amount of liquids consumed will need to decrease. So, less liquids over time will get the bladder to stop overproducing at night time.
This alarm goes off as soon as bed wetting occurs. This is to wake up the teen so that they are aware they have wet the bed a little bit and to go to the bathroom. This is a long-term therapy which helps the body to relearn the proper signals of a full bladder. The hope is that it will stop the wetting and instead go to the bathroom before the alarm goes off.
Medication for teenage enuresis come in the form of a nasal spray and tablets. It attempts to increase the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) by providing a synthetic form. This might not be the treatment for everyone though as it has a success rate of about 40% to 60%.
There is no doubt that this is going to be a touchy issue to discuss with your teen and will need to be approached with sensitivity and a little TLC. They will be going through a lot mentally, emotionally and physically at this time so being kind will go a long way. Always seek professional help if you are in doubt at any stage. Additional resources and advice can be sourced through the Continence Foundation Australia, Bedwetting Institute for Australia and several other parenting forums - don't be afraid to reach out as you are not alone.
]]>Do you remember when your kids were young and you wondered when they would sleep through the night? The relief you felt when they finally did? If you ask any parent, it is without question a milestone when their child sleeps through. They then enter their tween stage and then for a lot of parents, something happens to their child. Bedtime starts to become a source of worry and stress. They don’t look forward to bedtime and they may worry about being able to fall asleep. These changes could be a sign that your child is going through anxiety at bedtime.
Before discussing the symptoms of anxiety at bedtime, it is important to talk about anxiety on its own. First of all, it is normal for a child to sometimes be anxious. You will find that what they are anxious about will change as they get older. The first form of anxiety that most parents will notice is separation anxiety. It is when this anxiety becomes extreme that parents should take a closer look at what is the cause.
Beyond Blue states that when you suspect your child has anxiety, they may often seek reassurance from you. They may tell you they have physical pain or have a lot of fears and gets upset quite easily. You may have noticed they cling to you or worry a lot about doing things right all the time. They also always see the dangerous or negative side to things.
Child anxiety at bedtime are these fears and worries magnified at bedtime. Some symptoms you may notice are:
To reduce anxiety at bedtime comes down to putting in place techniques that will help keep them calm. One important thing to remember is that the fears and worries they have in their mind are exactly that. It is not fear of their bedroom or anything they can see or touch but rather an irrational fear of things they make up in their mind. Here are five techniques you can put in place at home to reduce the anxiety at bedtime in your child.
It is important to understand that to be able to reduce fear and anxiety, you need to know what is coming up ahead. This is where a good bedtime routine plays a big role. Something simple like having a bath to relax your child might help. Then a bedtime story and getting to sleep around the same time will also help. This means they know exactly what to expect and this then reduces their anxiety.
When they settled into bed, put some time aside to have a chat. They can talk about what is on their mind. If they have any fears that are starting to creep up, make sure you acknowledge them and then reassure them. When you say to them it’s time to leave then it’s exactly that, make sure you set boundaries. They may try and call you back for more chat time or to actually stay and sleep with them. Let them know the routine and stay firm when leaving them to rest and fall asleep.
So, you can see them starting to worry and anxiety is creeping up at bedtime again. Ask them what is making them scared. Is it the dark, or noises or something else? By identifying what is making them scared, you can then battle that fear together.
You might find that by allowing them a day time nap, they are more alert at night and hence won’t fall asleep. Keeping them up and active will ensure that by bedtime their bodies are ready to rest. Older children if getting enough sleep overnight should not need a nap during the day.
A sense that they are not safe is one of the main causes that anxiety at bedtime sets in. Thoughts that a monster is under their bed or they hear noises that make their imagination go wild. Create a haven for them in their bedroom to make them feel safe. Have a night light to create a sense of warmth but also security so that it's not all dark. Make sure there isn’t any noises that might stop them from sleeping like the TV or phone. Make sure these are off an hour before bedtime.
So, you have tried all these techniques and nothing has worked, now what? It would be a good idea to book in to see their pediatrician. They can give further advice and rule out anything medical like sleep apnoea as a cause. They will be able to help you in your journey to better sleep for your child.
]]>LED light therapy works well because it kills the bacteria using blue light, all while reducing inflammation that causes the inflammation around pimples in the skin. “Blue light has been shown to penetrate the skins hair follicles and pores which harbor bacteria and can cause inflammation, and therefore acne. Bacteria are very sensitive to the blue light spectrum – it shuts down their metabolism and kills them” (Marnie Nussbaum, M.D. New York Dermatologist).
When the light is shone on your skin, it has the ability to penetrate deeply through all the skin layers to kill any underlying bacteria and getting rid of sebum (oil) that may cause future acne breakouts that teenagers are prone to. After a few treatments, the blemishes will eventually disappear and your skin will return to its normal, healthy appearance.
This LED treatment method is also effective for the treatment of acne scars, so it can help you regain confidence knowing that your skin looks great day in and day out! ]]>The best puberty books for girls are not only comprehensive but body positive and inclusive as well.
Most girls know the American Girl empire very well, so it is comforting to them to see that name on the cover of The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Younger Girls. This book is recommended for eight years old through ten years old, making it the perfect accompaniment to early puberty information, including tips on eating healthy, making friends, buying a bra, getting pimples, and even getting a period. This is the first in a series, so once your child gets older, you can get the second one that covers even more.
This is a book that has stood up to the test of time through some careful rewrites and carefully added sections. Meant for girls in grades 4 through 8, it covers a lot of great things including whether to use pads or tampons, all of the information about body hair, and the perspiration situation. The reason this book has stood the test of time is that the tone of the book feels more like a best friend or an older sister.
For younger girls, those between third and sixth grade, Ready, Set Grow! Is a comprehensive look at puberty and aging. It encourages your daughter to celebrate herself and her changing body, talking openly and progressively about things like body odor, weight, height, breast development, and pimples. It doesn’t make your child afraid of her own body.
For a family that wants a more biblical approach to puberty, this book is one of the best options. It covers all of the topics that the other books cover, including nutrition, exercise, make-up, and physical changes, but from a more religious perspective.
One of the most fun books about puberty, this covers everything that your daughter will face- and we do mean everything. From the way their bodies change, to friendship problems, to health matters, to social media, and family problems. Girls love it because it has a list of books, TV shows, movies, and heroines that they can connect to – making it seem more like a workbook and a place to express themselves rather than just a textbook.
This is probably the bestselling puberty book for boys, explaining everything that boys need to know about voice changing, acne, shaving, and yes, “morning surprises,” as they put it. The author really understands how to talk to teen and tween boys without sounding like she is preaching. There are cartoons as well, which helps them get engrossed in the content.
Similar to the book for girls, this book is a great source for boys over ten years old. She is honest and forthright about all of the struggles and triumphs teen boys will face – from their voices finally lowering to the anger they will sometimes feel at the rest of the world. Everything from physical changes to social responsibility is covered expertly and in a way that is completely parent approved.
This guide, from The American Medical Association, is an in-depth and extensive look at what a boy goes through in puberty. There are many pages on feelings and body changes, making boys really think about themselves and what their bodies are doing. It even talks about how girls seem to grow up a little faster, and why that isn’t a problem. This is a rare feat for a book about boy’s puberty. There is even a helpful glossary.
For a complete guide to sex, growing up, changing bodies, and health, look no further than this book. For ages 7 on up, this book series is also one of the only ones to cover homosexuality, families, and love. Note that many people won’t think this book is appropriate for their children, but it is extremely popular because it doesn’t lie to your child, it goes in depth about everything, and it considers all young boys.
This book is written by people who understand what it means to be a boy going through puberty. It seems to have a voice that few other books have found. It is easy to read, easy to understand, and straightforward in how it approaches the topic. It is filled with easy to read sections that answer questions, give tips, and even has a part for a Q&A.
It is often difficult in Australia to source a wide variety of books on puberty written for a tween and teen audience. The links provided beside each book provide options for immediate download from the Australian Amazon Kindle web store, or for domestic bookshops/overseas bookshops with reasonable postage options.
]]>Thankfully, there are several solutions available to help you combat acne and get that clear, unblemished skin. The best acne treatment includes several factors like your diet, skincare, hygiene, and the right products for your skin type. If you’re careful and take the right precautions, you can control breakouts and enjoy clear skin.
Often, acne is unavoidable, but some habits and triggers can aggravate the skin condition and make your acne worse. You need to follow a good diet and remain active because a healthy body will lead to a healthy skin. Other steps you can take to protect yourself from acne include:
There are no one-size fits all solution when it comes to skincare. Different people react differently to products so you need to experiment with and explore the options available to you. You also need to choose products that are specially formulated for your particular skin type. For example, if you have extremely oily skin, you’ll need cleansers, toners, and moisturisers that are specifically formulated for oily skin. The suggestion below are collated from a review of customer feedback on multiple e-commerce sites across Australia and the USA.
As mentioned before, you need a good skincare routine to keep your skin clear of acne and blemish-free. Nivea Daily Essential consists of all the items you need to keep your skin clean, balanced, and hydrated. This range consists of a Refreshing Cleansing Mousse, Refreshing Toner, and Moisturising day cream with an SPF of 15. The cleansing mousse is gentle so it’s ideal for dry or sensitive skin. The toner is just strong enough to clean the skin and gentle enough to balance it. The day cream will restore hydration to parched and stripped skin. An SPF of 15 isn’t really enough so you will need to apply sunscreen before you step out.
This system is specifically targeted towards acne-prone skin so it’s quite effective. Natio is an Australian brand. This system is more suitable for combination to oily skin and contains antibacterial agents that target acne-producing germs. The Dual Action Cleanser and Toner is a little too harsh for dry and sensitive skin, but works well for oily skin. The Detoxifying Face Scrub contains gentle jojoba beads that exfoliate the skin well and leave it clean and fresh. The Oil-Free Moisturiser is ideal for acne prone skin and will help your skin stay matte all day.
Toner is essential to remove lingering cleansing agents and restoring the balance to your skin. This solution will also soothe any irritation and minimise the chances of acne and blemishes. The toner contains white willow and witch hazel, both of which are considered great for your skin. The Sanctuary Spa toner is mild enough to suit all skin type so you don’t need to worry about breakouts and other such problems.
The 3-Step from Clinique
Clinique is a known skincare and cosmetics brand and while their products are a little more expensive compared to the ones mentioned above, they are effective. The 3-Step solution from Clinique consists of a cleanser, a liquid exfoliant, and a moisturiser. You can choose a system based on your skin type. All three products can be used in your daily skincare routine.
Spot treatments are a great way to dry out and remove acne overnight. The Origins remover gel has salicylic acid and witch hazel extracts along with ingredients like red algae and caffeine. All of these ingredients will dry out the acne overnight. All you need to do is apply the gel over your acne with a cotton swab before you go to bed and let the treatment sink in overnight.
There is no silver bullet when it comes to treating teenage acne and a lot of the time it is trial and error, trying different products and methods to reduce the effects of breakouts. It the standard tropical treatments do not work for your it is always advised to go and see your general practitioners and often chronic acne can only be treated or improved with prescription medication.
]]>But before choosing which style is best, it’s worth considering what size bed to add to the room. Sales of single beds have dropped significantly in the last few years as more teens opt for king-singles or even double beds on which they’ll sleep, chat, watch TV and even do their homework. Clearly, available space is the defining factor but each of the decorating ideas in this list of Top Ten 10 Trends can be adapted to suit either single or double bed.
The key to decorating a teen bedroom, in most cases, is to do away with childish decor and dress the space up as a retreat and a place for them to express their own style. Since tastes are likely changing as the trends change then keep the basic wall colour neutral and use cool bedroom accessories and fresh bed linen to update the space and give it personality.
Sickly sweet pastels from floor to ceiling can be quite childish for a teen girls bedroom. But some teens still like pastels; particularly the uber cool and on-trend blush pinks. This room uses a great colour scheme of blush, luxe grey and lilac. The framed black and white prints on a slim-line shelf add just the right amount of grown-up feel to the room. And the layers of texture using fur and velvet cushions make that bed look so inviting. Finally a touch of whimsy is introduced with the pendant light and LED fairy lights draped across the wall. This teen room space is so grown up even adults would covet it.
An Art Gallery is the perfect way for a teen to express their individuality and creativity. Whether it’s their own artwork on display or inspirational art prints, they don’t have to be framed. Posters, collectables and other decorative pieces like garlands of tassels, pompoms and beads, macramé wall hangings, fairy lights and even an LED neon light all look great grouped together as a very personalized gallery. For a less permanent option try fixing picture ledges at staggered heights on the wall above the bed and layering up framed prints, photos and items of the teens choice. The images – and therefore the space – can be updated as frequently as desired.
Scandi
Not all teenagers are blessed with big bedrooms and it’s not always simple to convert a child’s room to a more grown-up space. This attic bedroom does a great job of making that transition, with a cool Scandi vibe. Clever use of the entire room, especially the high ceilings makes the most of the available space by including a raised built-in loft bed and a study space underneath… leaving the rest of the room free for a wardrobe (hopefully not scattered across the newly-freed-up floor). The white walls enhance the Scandi style and the sense of space – essential in a teens room. Linen and accessories in white and grey tones keep the room gender-neutral. Alternatively, include some colourful bed linen to add some personality and flair.
Chill Out Zone
When you’re a teenager your bedroom is an important and very private space to hang out and retreat from the world. This bedroom has the perfect getaway space in the form of a loft. The rest of the décor in the room is pretty simple but still functional. If there’s the option to install a chill-out zone or reading nook in a teenagers room then something like this will be much appreciated. Better still, when it’s being built let the teen liaise with the contractor to install some hidden spaces in the loft for hiding some of their more treasured possessions. The only thing cooler than this space, are parents brave enough to build one!
Fresh, fun, colourful and cool describes the best of Japanese street style known as Harajuku – and this bedroom has loads of it. The ice-white walls and painted wooden floor are the perfect backdrops for a mad mix of patterns and textures in wall art, floor coverings, decorator pieces and bed linen. The beauty of this style is that the rules are out the window and anything goes, which is perfect for a teen to express a bunch of styles all rolled into one room. But there’s nothing overwhelming about this space – it’s just young and playful.
Hanging chairs come in so many shapes and sizes and make for a stylish seat easily incorporated into many of the other Top 10 Trends listed here, like Boho and Scandi. If it’s not possible to hang one from the ceiling then there are plenty of styles, which also include a stand. While this rattan version will suit most room styles there are also clear Perspex bubble designs more fitting for a modern room. Whatever the style, they look great draped in a sheepskin and made more comfortable with cushions. Used as a place to read or listen to music they can free up valuable floor space in an otherwise small room. Grab a book and get hanging!
Boho
Looking for a whole new look for a teenage girls bedroom to avoid everything being “matchy-matchy”, then consider the very popular Bohemian-style. Start with some plain, neutral furniture and introduce bold patterned bed linen, cushions and throws. Boho-style can also include Folksy patterns like paisley or some Seventies Retro-style rattan furniture, like this bedhead, to introduce pops of colour. Add some whimsy with accessories such as the woven lampshade and flamingo. There’s an opportunity to also go beachy with this style, using artwork and other coastal-inspired accessories. If the teenager wants to avoid bright colours then Boho-inspired rooms look just as good using pastels. Add loved pieces and it will all come together.
It goes without saying, the more storage the better - as every parent knows how difficult it can be to get your teenagers to clean and tidy up after themselves. Neat storage systems, from shelving to wardrobes, drawers to under-bed or end-of-bed storage benches means there’s no excuse for clutter. This example is extra storage for the most frequently worn and used items and is in addition to a traditional wardrobe. It has custom storage not only for clothes but also for jewellery and even nail polish – all of those essentials. There are so many creative ways to add storage and give that personal touch by using ready-made fittings from stores such as IKEA and K-Mart. And to make it even easier, there are countless hacks online showing DIY solutions using items often at a fraction of the cost of custom storage.
Not all girls want pretty, girly bedrooms – in fact, plenty will want their bedrooms to reflect their more grungy and edgy personal style and generally, this doesn’t mean pink walls and flowers everywhere. Rough-around the edges can be stylish too, as this industrial decorating scheme shows - with its graffiti wall art and rough-luxe finishes. If you find an artist to paint the wall for you then the design options are endless or an easier alternative for the art is readily available graffiti-style wallpaper. Team with a metal bed frame, metal lockers for storage, industrial lighting and denim-look bed linen, and you’ve got an urban teen girl bedroom with a warehouse vibe which is just as suitable for boys too.
A bedroom study space is essential for any child at school or college for homework, but it doesn’t need to be boring. This desk and shelving have been transformed into a space your teen will want to hang out in. Adjustable shelves house art supplies, framed prints, and photos, books as well as accessories which look great while also functioning as organisational desk essentials. Using adjustable shelves helps to customise the space as required by adding or taking away shelves. Complete the look with a stylish chair to suit. This look is easily adapted for a boy’s room as well.
